Towards Empathic Neurofeedback for Interactive Storytelling
نویسندگان
چکیده
Interactive Narrative is a form of digital entertainment based on AI techniques which support narrative generation and user interaction. Despite recent progress in the field, there is still a lack of unified models integrating narrative generation, user response and interaction. This paper addresses this issue by revisiting existing Interactive Narrative paradigms, granting explicit status to users’ disposition towards story characters. We introduce a novel Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) design, which attempts to capture empathy for the main character in a way that is compatible with filmic theories of emotion. Results from two experimental studies with a fully-implemented system demonstrate the effectiveness of a neurofeedback-based approach, showing that subjects can successfully modulate their emotional support for a character who is confronted with challenging situations. A preliminary fMRI analysis also shows activation during user interaction, in regions of the brain associated with emotional control. 1998 ACM Subject Classification H.5.2 [Information Interfaces and Presentation]: User Interfaces

A Brain-Computer Interface to a Plan-Based Narrative
Interactive Narrative is a form of digital entertainment heavily based on AI techniques to support narrative generation and user interaction, significant progress arriving with the adoption of planning techniques. However, there is a lack of unified models that integrate generation, user responses and interaction. This paper addresses this by revisiting existing Interactive Narrative paradigms,...
متن کاملThe Motivational Appeal of Interactive Storytelling: Towards a Dimensional Model of the User Experience
A conceptual account to the quality of the user experience that interactive storytelling intends to facilitate is introduced. Building on socialscientific research from ‘old’ entertainment media, the experiential qualities of curiosity, suspense, aesthetic pleasantness, self-enhancement, and optimal task engagement (“flow”) are proposed as key elements of a theory of user experience in interact...
متن کاملInteractive Non-Fiction: Towards a New Approach for Storytelling in Digital Journalism
The development of digital journalism, an important area of storytelling, has focused primarily on incorporating interactive multimedia components to traditional linear news stories. In this paper, we propose a new approach that places central focus on text, the core of journalism, based on insights from fictional interactive digital storytelling. Drawing upon the convention of interactive fict...
متن کاملMeasuring User Responses to Interactive Stories: Towards a Standardized Assessment Tool
With the increasing number of prototypes and market applications of interactive storytelling, the understanding and optimization of how end users respond to computer-mediated interactive narratives is of growing importance. Based on a conceptual model of user experiences in interactive storytelling, a measurement instrument for empirical user-based research was developed. We report findings fro...
متن کاملTowards Accessible Authoring Tools for Interactive Storytelling
This contribution presents and discusses Scenejo as an experimental platform for Interactive Digital Storytelling, focusing on the authoring process as initial viewpoint for its development. Special emphasis is on the construction of conversational threads for virtual actors using pattern matching, employing transition graph representations as the main interface for authoring. In the conclusion...
